According to the American Psychological Association, women are more likely than men to report having a chronic stress (a stress level of at least 8 on a 10-point scale). About half of all women reported that their stress levels increased over the past five years.
How Does Chronic Stress Affect Women?
Despite its negative connotation, stress isn’t bad. In fact, some stressors exert positive influences on health. Take for example the recent health trend of intermittent fasting. Studies show that short fasts of up to 24 hours can extend life span and lower blood sugar levels.
Stress can also save a life. If a dog in your neighborhood breaks free of its leash and starts chasing you, it’s the stress hormone, adrenaline, that gives your body the instant burst of energy to run for it.
But when your body is constant stress mode your health can suffer. Here’s how chronic stress particularly affects women the most:
Stress releases another hormone called cortisol. Cortisol increases appetite.
Difficult and/or Irregular Cycles
Chronic stress alters ovarian hormone levels, making for a more problematic premenstrual syndrome (PMS), missed cycles, or heavier periods.
Women are more likely than men to have an anxiety disorder. And women with anxiety are more likely to have elevated cortisol levels, or exhausted adrenal glands. (The adrenal glands secrete cortisol.)
Low Libido and Low Enjoyment of Sex
Chronic stress zaps the urge to become intimate. Elevated cortisol levels lead to imbalanced sex hormones. Low levels of sex hormones or an imbalance can create vaginal dryness. Women who suffer from vaginal dryness often experience anxiety before intimacy because of the dilemma caused by the lack of enjoyment and the desire to please their partner. This pre-intimacy anxiety leads to a vicious cycle of more stress.
Conditions that affect the gut such as IBS (irritable bowel syndrome) are often at least in part caused by chronic stress. IBS is much more likely to affect women than men. Chronic stress weakens the barrier of the small intestine, making it more difficult to absorb nutrients. This can lead to gas, bloating, constipation and other digestion problems.
These are just some of the ways in which chronic stress affects women’s health. Many women who report a great deal of stress also suffer from headaches and migraines. Evidence shows that stress is very often the trigger of migraines.
Everybody eats a few times a day and goes to the bathroom at least a few times a day. In order to manage stress, you need to practice stress-management techniques as often as you eat or go to the bathroom.
For example, in the morning, before you get out of bed, listen to a short meditation. These days, with smartphone apps, it’s very easy to meditate every day. You should also do a meditation right before bed.
And in between meditation sessions, you can squeeze in a mini yoga or deep breathing session around lunch time.
You’ll also need to make sure your environment is not cluttered. Living in a messy home generally creates more stress. If you feel powerless to take the first step in simplifying or decluttering your home, ask for help. There are professionals who do this for a living.
Exercise is shown time and time again to help lower stress in research studies. In fact, one research study concludes exercise is associated with “emotional resilience” to stress. But be careful not to overdo it. Prolonged high-intensity exercise is a form of stress. And your body can’t distinguish from different stressors. To your body, stress is stress, period.
It may seem obvious that diet is a big factor in controlling stress levels. However, many people aren’t aware that eating heavily-processed foods and foods with lots of added sugar is a huge contributor to chronic stress. Eating junk may supply the brain with a short-lived, feel-good dopamine rush. But as soon as that buzz starts to wear off, guilt, fatigue and other negative feelings take euphoria’s place.
Herbal medicine has been used for thousands of years. But it’s only been in recent decades that research on Mother Nature’s most potent stress-busting botanical ingredients have been conducted.
And what the research shows time and time again is that there’s a specific class of herb that is best for neutralizing the harmful effects of stress and rebalancing the body.
These herbs are called adaptogens, or adaptogenic herbs. Adaptogens are considered by many herbalists and natural health experts to be the cream of the crop of natural stress-relief remedies.
Out of the tens of thousands of plants on the planet that are used in natural health, only a tiny percentage meet the definition of adaptogen.
By definition, adaptogens are:
Broad-acting. This means that unlike medications that do just one thing like lower blood pressure, adaptogens perform many functions in the body.
Non-toxic: Not all natural remedies are safe from side effects. But adaptogens are considered safe even at high doses, posing no toxicity risk.
Normalizing: Why be normal? Well, when it comes to having peak-performing cells, you want to be normal. Adaptogens help normalize organ function. They boost under-performing organ systems and relax the body where it needs calming.
So what are the best herbs for neutralizing the harmful effects of stress, be it emotional, physical or environmental? Which adaptogens can rebalance the body?
The truth is that no single adaptogenic herb is going to do much good if you have high levels of stress. And the problem is that most adaptogenic herbal supplements contain at most a few adaptogens. A few adaptogens are better than no adaptogens. But again, if you’ve been stressed to the max for years, popping a pill containing a few adaptogens with a bunch of fillers isn’t likely to be the miracle you’re looking for.
What you need is an adaptogenic formula with several adaptogens. The more adaptogens, the merrier. And not just because it takes that many adaptogens to make a difference. It’s also because the effects of each herb is more powerful in a formula.
Dan Moriarty, a master herbalist with over 40 years of experience studying plant medicine, is the formulator of Thrivagen. Many health bloggers and celebrities who are hyping up adaptogens weren’t even born when Dan started researching which herbs are most efficacious for neutralizing stress.
Thrivagen contains one of the most complex adaptogenic herbal formulas for women’s total wellness on the market.
It’s simple to use. You just squirt a few pumps under your tongue and let the adaptogens do their balancing act. Some people notice the effects shortly after using Thrivagen. But for best results, it’s best to use it once or twice daily for 4 weeks.
Many single adaptogenic herbal supplements cost dozens of dollars. You might expect to pay a small fortune for Thrivagen and its 16 adaptogenic herbs. But Thrivagen costs only as little as $1.66 per day, far less than a mocha latte from a coffee shop.
Thrivagen’s 16 adaptogens work together like a cellular team of superheroes to normalize your body’s response stress.
What this means is that instead of fire alarms constantly ringing, triggering a flood of stress hormones, Thrivagen acts kind of like a professional organizer and life coach, helping each organ perform more efficiently.
